A glimpse into Norfolk's past

Norfolk Island boasts a unique and exciting history with not one, not two, but four separate settlements - all of which play a large part in this tour. The third settlement was established as a brutal penal colony for British convicts in the early 19th century, which has been described as “Hell on Earth”.

However, it was the arrival of the Pitcairn Islanders in 1856 that truly transformed the island's culture and identity. These descendants of the HMS Bounty mutineers brought their own customs, language, and traditions to the island and added a new layer to its already rich history. Today, Norfolk Island is a melting pot of these three distinct settlements, creating a fascinating blend of history and culture that is sure to excite and intrigue any visitor.
